Montgomery County is among the few areas in the entire United States that can boast multiple Class I commercial rail carriers.

The Four Class I rail lines that serve Montgomery County are:

Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF)
Canadian National Railway (CN)
Norfolk Southern (NS)
Union Pacific (UP)

Passenger Rail

Passenger rail service is provided by Amtrak at stations located within a 30-70 minute drive, depending on where you start in the county. The Chicago-New Orleans route has stops in Carlinville, IL; Springfield, IL; and St. Louis, MO. The Chicago-Carbondale, IL route has stops in Mattoon, Effingham and Centralia, IL.
